MICHIGAN HEAD COOK

Position Description:

 

This is a critical role in Youth Haven's mission to meet the needs of disadvantaged children. The Head Cook/Food Service Manager is responsible for management and oversight of the food service at Youth Haven's Michigan campus. This includes preparing and cooking delicious, balanced meals for the children and staff, as well as managing food allergies and maintaining a safe, clean kitchen. The Head Cook/Food Service Manager will also oversee meal planning and cooking for occasional special events at the Michigan campus, as well as meals for volunteers as needed.

Principal Responsibilities:

​

• Be a consistent Christian role model for the children and staff

• Be a contributing part of the missions team; be able to occasionally lead a devotional for the staff, share what God has done in your personal life, and have input in ways Youth Haven can better reach lost children

• Prepare, cook and serve nutritious, kid-friendly meals and snacks for each children's retreat at Youth Haven

• Prepare, cook and serve nutritious, adult-friendly meals and snacks for staff functions or groups of volunteers on occasion

• Prepare menus in advance for each children's retreat

• Prepare quarterly and annual budget projections for food and other kitchen related expenses

• Create and place orders for food and other food service items as needed

• Maintain a clean and safe kitchen environment, subject to regular inspections by local agencies and Youth Haven leadership

• Lead and mentor other staff, volunteers, and teens in a confident, Christ-like manner

• Prepare, cook and serve meals as needed for other Youth Haven functions, including some special events

Qualifications and Requirements:

​

• Must have an active, growing, personal relationship with Jesus Christ 

• Be a contagious and consistent Christian role model inside and outside the mission of Youth Haven

• A sincere and deep commitment to Youth Haven's mission and core values, understanding the opportunity to be involved with Youth Haven as a home mission organization

• A mission minded, servant attitude required

• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

• Prior working experience in food service or similar position

• Able to understand and follow food safety guidelines as required by state and local regulations and codes

• Serv-safe certification required either before starting, or shortly thereafter

• Responsible, organized and self-motivated

• Able to prepare meals for large groups of people efficiently and in a timely manner

• Able to prepare menus and order food and supplies

• Able to lead a group of teen assistants

• Able to be on your feet for extended periods of time
